Directions

The Pumphouse is conveniently located on the outskirts of Durham City, where town meets country.  Durham Railway station, on the main east coast line is less than 2 miles away.  The A1 is less than 3 miles from our door.  The directions below should help you to find your way to our door.  The Pumphouse is accessible to a wheelchair user travelling independently.

If you live in the Durham area we would suggest that if you don’t want to drive then please try one of the following taxi numbers all of whom know where we are and charge very reasonable rate.

Directions to Pumphouse by Car

    From the North

    • From the A1 leave at Junction 62, at the roundabout take the 3rd exit (signposted Durham)
    • At the next roundabout take the 3rd exit (Signposted A690, City Centre)
    • At the next roundabout take the 1st exit onto New Elvet (Signposted Coxhoe, Bowburn (A177))
    • At the traffic lights bear left onto Hallgarth Street (Signposted County Court)
    • At the roundabout take the 1st exit on to the A177 (Signposted The Pumphouse Restaurant)
    • Turn right before the bridge marking the edge of Shincliffe (Also signposted The Pumphouse Restaurant)
    • Continue down this road and follow signs to our door

    From the North West (of Durham )

    • From the A691, follow signs for Durham City Centre, along Southfield Way
    • At the County Hall roundabout take the 3rd exit onto Framwellgate Peth (Signposted City Centre) and continue down this road until you reach Durham City Centre
    • At the roundabout take the 1st exit onto Leazes Road (Signposted Sunderland)
    • At the next roundabout take the 2nd exit onto New Elvet (Signposted Coxhoe, Bowburn (A177))
    • At the traffic lights bear left onto Hallgarth Street (Signposted County Court)
    • At the roundabout take the 1st exit on to the A177 (Signposted The Pumphouse Restaurant)
    • Turn right before the bridge marking the edge of Shincliffe (Also signposted The Pumphouse Restaurant)
    • Continue down this road and follow signs to our door

     

    From the South

      • From the A1 leave at junction 61, then at the roundabout take the 2nd exit onto the A177 (signposted Bowburn)
      • Bear left onto the A177 and travel through Bowburn
      • Continue on the A177 through both High Shincliffe and Shincliffe.
      • As you pass the Rose Tree on your left, you will cross a bridge,  on the other side of the bridge is a left turn (Signposted The Pumphouse)
      • Continue down this road and follow signs to our door

       

      From the South West (of Durham )

        • Travelling along the A688, at Thinford Roundabout take the 1st exit onto the A167 (signposted Durham)
        • Continue on the A167 through Croxdale
        • At the roundabout take the 2nd exit onto the A167 (signposted Durham)
        • At the next roundabout take the 2nd exit onto South Road (A177)
        • As you travel down this road you should pass Mount Oswald Golf course on your left
        • Continue along this road through the traffic lights at the Park & Ride Scheme, at the bottom of the bank turn right at the lights The New Inn should be on your left.
        • At the roundabout take the 2nd  exit on to the A177 (Signposted The Pumphouse Restaurant)
        • Turn right before the bridge marking the edge of Shincliffe (Also signposted The Pumphouse Restaurant)
        • Continue down this road and follow signs to our door
